Darwinian Evolution has been a theory in crisis for several decades. Biological reality and microbiological observations increasingly undermine Darwin’s claims. A scientific theory should grow stronger as new discoveries confirm it. But Darwin’s theory has done the opposite. From the very beginning until today, the evidence has consistently failed to live up to what the theory demands. That is why it’s now a “theory in crisis.” Not because people dislike it, but because the science itself has steadily exposed its weaknesses and false assumptions.
Fossil Record Doesn’t Show Gradual Changes
The story begins with Charles Darwin himself. In On the Origin of Species (1859), Darwin openly admitted that the fossil record posed “the most obvious and serious objection” to his theory, since it did not show the countless transitional forms gradual evolution required. He hoped that future discoveries would erase this problem. But by the 20th century, paleontologists like Otto Schindewolf and even the famed Harvard biologist Stephen Jay Gould were acknowledging that the fossil record stubbornly displayed sudden appearance and long periods of stasis, not slow and gradual change.
DNA Cannot be Explained by Darwinism
The crisis only deepened with the discovery of DNA. When James Watson and Francis Crick uncovered the double helix structure in 1953, it revealed that life is built on an intricate digital code. Molecular biologists such as Hubert Yockey and Michael Polanyi pointed out that this kind of specified information could not be explained by random mutation and natural selection. By the 1960s, Motoo Kimura introduced the “neutral theory of molecular evolution,” which admitted that most DNA differences could not be explained by Darwin’s mechanism at all.
Darwin’s Mechanism Fundamentally inadequate
It was against this backdrop that molecular biologist Michael Denton published Evolution: A Theory in Crisis in 1985 and followed it up with Evolution: Still a Theory in Crisis in 2016. Denton pulled together evidence from biochemistry, paleontology, and genetics to argue that Darwin’s mechanism was not merely incomplete, but fundamentally inadequate. He emphasizes that, more than 30 years after his first book, there remains “an irresistible consilience of evidence for rejecting Darwinian cumulative selection as the major driving force of evolution.”
Later thinkers like Phillip Johnson, William Dembski, and Jonathan Wells extended the critique further, showing that advances in genomics and molecular biology only intensified the problem. The phrase “theory in crisis,” then, is not random rhetoric. It comes from decades of scientific challenges that began with Darwin’s own doubts and continue to this day.
DNA Points to Purposeful Design
And this leaves us with an important question. If Darwin’s story of life is collapsing under the weight of evidence, then what explanation does fit the facts? The encoded information evident in DNA and RNA inside cells, the remarkable fine tuning of DNA, the sudden appearance of complex forms in the fossil record, and the irreducible complexity of biological systems all point to purposeful design, not to blind chance. Far from being an afterthought, God is the most reasonable explanation for the order, beauty, and information woven into life from the very beginning.
